BUSINESS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Many photographers struggle to maintain a profitable business. But, with a profit and loss statement (P&L) they can see where to improve and better their pricing to stay open. The P&L allows you to view how much you’re spending over a time period. Comparing these statements allows you to see which pricing you have is best. The statements also allow you to see your profits easily and figure out if its profitable for your business. Expensive and personal cost must always be accounted for since time is money. Business owners should also take into account their services, reviews, reputation and much more when starting.  Starting a business will never be easy, especially during the first years. You will likely lose money, but with dedication you can overcome all these challenges and one day have the successful business you’ve always wanted.

My business plan would be like the following:

How would you market?

  • I would go around post flyers, ask people if they need photographer for events and also make a social media page for myself. I would just overall make a mark as a photographer in my neighborhood and city.

What would you charge?

  • At the start I would likely charge a small price, depending on the project, but around $100 – 500. I would charge cheap because I am fairly new to the industry and so I need customers and build a rep for myself.

What would you include in a contract?

  • In my contrast I would include my time spent there, price, date, what I will shoot and edit, how much I would shoot, fees, and overall anything important to the project.

FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY

Photo David Bailey | David bailey, David bailey photography, 1960s fashion photography

Photos by David Bailey. I think he shot both photos in a studio with lighting. The first photo has slight shadows but she mainly takes up the whole frame. The second photo has a bright white on her arms so, the lighting must have been bright or close up.

AI IN PHOTOGRAPHY

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a new and coming technology in all aspects of the world. AI allows for technology to do human activities without the need of them. AI has already been in our world with digital smart assistants and the applications we use. Now a days modern cameras are starting to utilize AI in their system settings. For example, some cameras with the help of artifical intelligene have facial recognition so focusing on subjects during potraits is much easier. Another AI setting is being able to fix subjects red eyes when using flash on the cameras.

But, artifical intelligence isn’t only used by photographers on their cameras but also software. There are many different softwares that create or edit images. Pixlr is an editing software that has AI settings such as removing backgrounds and being able to apply things built in. Another popular software is ChatGPT, where you insert a text prompt such as “how should I photograph…..” and it will give you tips on how to do it. Other softwares can instead generate you an image off that prompt.

I personally think artificial intelligence is becoming a good thing. While it can be used to completely do a job, I think it also speeds up things. For example, tedious things such as selecting the sky on an image is annoying and with the help of AI that task is so much easier. I think AI will be a very helpful tool in photography but also start to replace jobs. Hiring an editor might be cheaper or completely useless because AI could do it for you. So, I think there are many benefits to AI but also cons that can hold us back.

THROUGH THE LENS
Takashi Yasuri likes to photograph Tokyo. He started this career as a hobby and saw Tokyo as boring. But a photographer came to the country, and he saw how different the place was. He saw Tokyo in a new way and perspective. He got his big break when his photo was featured on many media outlets.

Alex Strohl had always liked to do photography since he was a kid. He likes to have a reason to go out and shoot. He primarily likes to photograph landscapes and anything to do with the world such as rivers, mountains or land. He wants to inspire other people to go out and explore the world like he does because of the sheer beauty it has.

10 YEARS FROM NOW

In 10 years I want to see my myself being successful. I hope to have enough money to travel all around Europe and specifically to Switzerland. I also want to try so many new foods from these countries and learn their food culture. I also wish to purchase my dream car, the Aston Martin DB5 which was used in the James Bond movies. This car is so clean and simple that I’ve always wanted it.

SCREEN PRINTING PROCESS

  1. Find an image or use your own image to print.  Print your image on a transparent piece of paper or film. Make sure the image is pure black and white.
  2. Apply a light reactive emulsion and put the screen under bright light for 24hrs.
  3. After 24hrs clean off any unhardened solution with a wet towel or in the sink.
  4. Lay down you’re clothing or whatever you’re going to print it on flat on a flat surface.
  5. Put the screen on top of your item and press down hard. This requires 2 people.
  6. Add ink to the top of the screen and use a brush to spread it all on the screen.
  7. Let the product dry for some time and after taking off the screen you’re done.

PHOTOGRAPHY CAREER TREE

  1. I’m very interested in real estate photography.
  2. These photographers usually set up homes and take photos of them so that agent can post and try to sell the house and they try to show the house as best as possible.
  3. Real estate photographers make around $40,000 a year.
  4. I’m real interested in this field because I like real estate and photography. So, both of them together makes it a good job.
  5. I would need to mainly study photography and know a bit about real estate itself.

MOTION BLUR

5 tips I learned for motion blur:

  1. Trains and train stations are a good place to get motion blur because they move so fast, and people are idle waiting.
  2. Playgrounds are another good place for motion blur because of the variation of shots you can get of people having fun. Especially children since they’re the most active and run, jump everywhere.
  3. Shooting cars can allow for interior or exterior shots and can be really great.
  4. Fairs are also another amazing place because of the movement of the rides and stationary things. They also have amazing lighting on the rides and can make your shot so much better.
  5. Birds are another great thing to shoot for motion blur. Their wings allow for motion blur while their bodies are stationary.

STYLE OF WASSILY KANDISKY

I really like Kandisky work because of how bright it could be. This photo shows a whole city in a completely different way while still being able to capture it. The color Kandisky uses makes statements and show us her position on things.

STYLE OF SANDY SKOGLUND

Sandy Skoglund created images using multiple of the same props. She did all this before editing so everything took time to do. I really like her work because it in a way makes things look creepy but great at the same time.

POLITICAL POSTER

I feel that both men and women should be paid the same for equal work. Gender shouldn’t be a factor in how you get paid. I feel as this poster will get the message that there is a pay gap and hopefully soon this gap won’t be a thing, and everyone will be paid for equal work. I don’t think anyone will be offended besides people who profit off this gap.

$10,000 SPREE

Nikon D850 – Since I want to shoot landscape photos this camera would have all the capabilities to do this. Only costing $2,700 but doesn’t come with a lens.

Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR Lens – This lens has the ability to go to 16mm which would allow for a wide photo to capture all the things I want to. It cost only 1,000.

Manfrotto Element MII Aluminum Tripod with Ball Head (Black) – This tripod would hold my camera to take shots that require multiple shots to lay over in case the exposure isn’t perfect. It also holds 17lbs so I can add more things to my camera, and it will hold. Costing only $159.

Urth Norite 24L Modular Backpack (Black) – This backpack will hold all my equipment and costs only $185.

SanDisk 1TB Extreme PRO UHS-I SDXC Memory Card (x2) – These 2tb cards should be enough storage to store my photos when im out shooting. – Costing $340.

XDynamics EVOLVE 2 Professional Drone –  This drone will allow me to get shots at places I can’t reach in order to get better landscape photos and even record some things. – $3,700.

The rest of the money would go to other things like photoshop or lightroom.

Differences

JPEG or Joint Photographic Experts Group is the most commonly used file format. It compresses the photo to make it smaller typically a 10:1 compression. JPEG works best for photography photos and paintings of realistic scenes. PNG or Portable Network Graphic is popular with web designers as it handles graphics with transparent backgrounds. Similar to JPEG but is compressed with lossless compression and instead supports transparency. TIFF or Tag Image File Format is a computer file used to store raster graphics and image information. Mainly used to store high quality images before editing them to avoid lossy file formats. They are larger than Jpeg and Png and have better image quality than JPEG. GIF is a raster file format that supports 256 indexed colors and images to be combined for animations.  Different than the formats mentioned before because it has moving animations. RAW or digital negative is a format that contains uncompressed, raw image data that can be adjusted. They are used for storing unaltered image data and store the largest amount of detail out of any raster file type.

Depth of Field

Read and Write Review

  1. Aperture or f-stops is how wide or closed your opening of your camera is. Higher f-stop means smaller opening and vice versa. Shutter speed is how fast your camera will open and close to take a photo. ISO is how sensitive your sensors are to light. Higher ISO will be more sensitive to light.
  2. You should change your ISO if you’re in a dark place or a too bright place.
  3. In AP mode your camera will vary the exposure setting depending on the aperture value you’ve set. This controls the depth of field. SP mode you control the shutter speed, and the other settings are set to auto based of that.
  4. The AF modes are One shot AF, Servo AF and AI Autofocus. You can change them on the dial of the camera.
  5. You need to meter the light in order to get a perfect exposure for everything.
  6. A normal lens is 50mm, wide angle is anything less than 50mm and a telephoto lens is anything over 50mm.
  7. White balance is the temperature of the color in the image. You should change this whenever the color looks bad because of the sources of light.
  8. Depth of field is how sharp your background is or blurred. Shallow is blurred background while good is a clear background.
  9. Manual, auto focus, aperture priority, shutter speed priority, tv mode, p mode.
  10. Exposure compensation is when you purposely underexpose or overexpose your image in order to get something else right.
